"My professors challenged me to think carefully about how to design lessons to meet the varied learning, social, and emotional needs of each of my students. I was in an elementary school to observe and teach lessons almost every semester. By the time I became a student teacher, I had already designed and taught many lessons in kindergarten to sixth grade classrooms. These experiences were invaluable!"

Anne Elsener, currently an assistant professor of education at Dominican University River Forest, Illinois, credits her professors at Marian University for instilling in her the idea that educators never stop learning about their craft. “This principle has been instrumental in my development as an educator. After graduating from Marian University, I went on to obtain a master’s degree at the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate degree from Indiana University.”

Elsener says she was inspired by her professors at Marian University to build relationships with her students and design courses that are challenging and engaging. Elsener said she was always confident that Marian University would provide a challenging education and the experience she needed to continue on to a successful career. She loved the sense of community she found at Marian University and said she was often greeted by name when passing people on campus. One of her most meaningful memories is when she passed through a tunnel of professors at commencement who had lined up to congratulate them.

She was amazed by the number of professors who called her by name as she passed by and she realized how many of them she knew personally. Elsener said, “This sense of caring and being known by your professor makes a big difference in your education.”
